Valentine’s day origin
Each year, the fourteenth day of February has millions throughout the world offering sweets, roses, chocolates and other exquisite gifts to their loved ones. Restaurants and eateries are seen in many countries as being packed with couples happy to celebrate their relationship and the pleasure of being together through delicious cuisines. There seems to be hardly a young man or woman not eager to make the most of the day.
The explanation for all this is a benevolent cleric called Valentine who died more than 1000 years ago.
It is not exactly known why Valentine’s Day is known as the 14th of February or whether the honorable Valentine had any connection to this day. It is hard to get the history of Valentine’s Day from any source and the veil of centuries gone by has made it more difficult to find the roots behind this day. It is just a few stories that are our basis for Valentine’s Day history.
The current festival of St. Valentine’s Day is said to have derived from both ancient Christian and Roman customs. According to one tradition, the holiday derived from Lupercalis / Lupercalia’s ancient Roman celebration, a feast of prosperity that used to be celebrated on February 15 annually. But the rise of Christianity in Europe saw many pagan holidays renamed for the early Christian martyrs and dedicated to them.
Lupercalia made no exception. Pope Gelasius converted Lupercalia into a Christian feast day in 496 AD and scheduled his observance a day early, on 14 February. To the memory of Saint Valentine, a Roman martyr who died in the 3rd century, he declared 14 February as the feast day. It is this Valentine’s Day which honors modern Valentine’s Day. Pope Gelasius turned Lupercalia into a Christian feast day in 496 AD and set his observance a day earlier, on 14 February. In honor of Saint Valentine, a Roman martyr who lived in the 3rd century, he proclaimed 14 February as the feast day. It is this Valentine’s Day which celebrates modern Valentine’s Day.
There were at least three early Christian saints, by the name of Valentine, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia. Whereas in Rome one was a priest, in Terni another was a bishop. Nothing about St. Valentine’s Third is known except that he had met his end in Africa. Surprisingly, on 14 February all three were said to have been martyred.
Pope Gelasius wanted to honor the first of the above three men. Many scholars believe that St. Valentine was a priest who lived in Rome around A.D. 270 and drew the downside of the Roman emperor Claudius II who ruled during this time.St. Valentine’s story has two different stories-the the Christian and the Catholic. All accounts accept that Saint Valentine was a bishop who performed soldiers ‘ clandestine marriage ceremonies as opposed to Claudius II who had prohibited and executed young men’s marriage.
The golden era of the Roman empire had almost begun during Valentine’s lifetime. Lack of quality management triggered regular civil disputes. Education decreased, taxes increased and commerce endured a very bad time The Roman empire faced turmoil from all directions, from Northern Europe and Asia to the Gauls, Slavs, Huns, Turks, and Mongolians. Despite current powers, the empire had grown too big to be insulated from external hostility and internal instability. To protect the nation from invasion, more and more competent men were expected to be drafted as soldiers and officers.
As Claudius became the emperor, he believed that married men were more emotionally attached to their wives, making good soldiers therefore not. He believed the marriage had made the men weak. So he issued an edict prohibiting marriage to guarantee high-quality soldiers. The marriage ban has been a huge shock for the Romans. Yet they did not dare to voice opposition against the powerful Emperor. The decree’s hypocrisy was also recognized by kind Bishop Valentine. He saw the trauma of the young lovers, who gave up all hopes of marriage unity.
He intended to secretively combat the monarch’s instructions. Every time lovers thought about getting married, they went to Valentine who later met them in a secret place and joined them in the marriage sacrament. And so he was conducting other weddings secretly for young lovers. Yet items like that can not stay hidden for long. When Claudius came to know about this “lord of lovers,” it was only a matter of time and had him arrested.
Though serving his jail sentence, his jailor, Asterius, confronted Valentine. Valentine was said to have certain saintly powers and one of them gave him the ability to heal diseases. Asterius had a blind daughter and had knowledge of Valentine’s miraculous powers, he begged the latter to restore his blind daughter’s sight. The Catholic legend has it that Valentine did this through his strong faith arm, a theory debunked by the Lutheran story that otherwise agrees with the Catholic one.
Whatever the truth, that seems to bounce Claudius II met Valentine, it was said that he was fascinated by the latter’s integrity and faith. Valentine, though, refused to agree with the emperor about the marriage ban. It is also said that the emperor tried to convert Valentine to the Roman gods but in his attempts was unsuccessful. Valentine refused to recognize Roman Gods and even tried to convert the emperor, fully aware of the consequences. This angered Claudius II who gave the order of execution of Valentine. Meanwhile
The daughter of Valentine and Asterius had developed a deep friendship. It gave the young girl a deep sorrow of learning of the impending death of his friend. It is said that just before his death, Valentine begged his jailor for a pen and paper, and wrote a letter of farewell to her “From Your Valentine,” an expression that has existed ever since.
As per another story, during his captivity Valentine fell in love with his jailer’s girlfriend. However, historians don’t give that legend much importance.St. Valentine’s most likely narrative is one which is not based on Eros (passionate love) but agape (Christian love): he was martyred for failing to renounce his faith.
Therefore, for all couples, 14 February was a day and Valentine became his patron saint. It began to be celebrated annually by young Romans who gave affectionate handwritten greetings, known as Valentines, to the ladies they revered on this day. The day came to be known as St. Valentine’s Day,
with the advent of Christianity. Yet St. Valentine’s Day only became synonymous with devotion during the 14th century. UCLA medieval historian Henry Ansgar Kelly, an author of “Saint Valentine’s Cult and Chaucer,” cites Chaucer as the first to connect St. Valentine’s Day to sex. It was claimed that birds mated in medieval France and England on 14 February. Hence, in poetry devoted to the day, Chaucer used the bird image as a representation of lovers.
The royal engagement, birds mating season, and St. Valentine’s Day are all related in Chaucer’s “The Parliament of Fowls”: By the Middle, Ages Valentine became as popular as she became one of England and France’s most famous saints. Despite attempts by the Christian church to hallow the holiday, Valentine’s Day connection with passion and courtship persisted through the Middle Ages.
Through the centuries the vacation has evolved. By the 18th century, gift-giving and exchange of hand-made cards had become common in England on Valentine’s Day. On this day, homemade valentine cards made of flowers, ribbons, and featuring cupids and hearts began to be produced and handed over to the man or woman one loved. Finally, the tradition extended to the American colonies. It was not until the 1840s that the greeting cards for Valentine’s Day started to be produced commercially in the US. Esther A.
Howland Mount Holyoke, a teacher and Worcester resident, created the first American Valentine’s Day greeting cards. Mass. Howland, known as the Valentine’s Mum, crafted intricate designs of actual jewelry, ribbons and vivid photographs known as “scrap” It was when Howland began large-scale Valentine’s cards that the trend first caught on in the United States. Today, Valentine’s Day is one of America’s biggest holidays and has become a booming commercial success. 25 percent of all cards received each year are “valentine”s, according to the Greeting Card Association.
The “valentines” are often made with hearts to symbolize love, which Valentine’s Day Cards are better known as. The Valentine’s Day card has spread to Catholicism and is now being celebrated around the world. Charles, Duke of Orleans, sent one of the first valentines to his wife during his incarceration at the Tower of London in 1415 A.D. The passport is now being stored in the British Museum. There may be questions over Valentine’s actual identity, but we know he existed because archeologists recently discovered a Roman catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to Valentine’s Day.
